    The BSUF

Since its founding in 1961 and receipt of tax exempt status in 1964, the British Schools and Universities Foundation, Inc. has served as a catalyst for tax efficient funding by  United States taxpayers of educational, literary and scientific institutions in the British Commonwealth of Nations.

* BSUF makes grants to public and private, sectarian and non-sectarian, schools, colleges, universities, and other educational, scientific and literary organizations in the British Commonwealth of Nations.

* BSUF seeks to strengthen ties, both financial and otherwise, between institutions and their alumni residing in the United States or who are US tax payers.

* BSUF provides a voice for alumni residing in the United States to express their needs as potential donors to Commonwealth educational institutions.

* BSUF serves as a source of information for institutions trying to start or maintain development organizations and reach out to alumni.

* BSUF's roster of approved institutions currently numbers more than 200.  Since its founding the BSUF has provided $25,000,000 in grants to these institutions ($35,000,000 in 2006 dollars), with more than $3,800,000 in 2006.

Information about BSUF can be found in the "Guidestar Reports" published by Philanthropic Research, Inc.  On their Web site  http://www.guidestar.org/   you can view a summary of this information, as well as a copy of the IRS Form 990 filed by BSUF -- a public document that includes much detailed financial data.  The Foundation's Federal ID number is 13-6161189; you will find this number helpful in locating BSUF information on the "Guidestar" Web site.

† ALAN C. ROOT (1925-2006)

It grieves us deeply to report that our friend and colleague Alan C. Root, Chairman emeritus, Honorary Director and Life Fellow of BSUF, passed away on 24 February.  Alan joined BSUF in 1971 and served with great distinction as President from 1992 to 1997 and as Chairman from 1997 to 2000.  His strong loyalty and dedication to the Foundation and its cause were exemplary.

Born at Essex , England in 1925, Alan Charles Root earned a BA at St. John’s College , Oxford and an MA at Pembroke College , Cambridge before becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1951.  After receiving an MBA at Stanford University in 1953, he was a research analyst at Dow Chemical, Manager of Marketing Research at GE and VP - Business Planning at Mosler Safe. Mosler having been acquired by American Standard, Alan became VP - Corporate Planning at that Company and rose to Senior Advisor and member of the Boards of Directors of several American Standard companies.

Alan served to the rank of Captain in the British Army (1944-48).  The Russian language skills he acquired at Oxford enabled him to serve as a liaison officer at the Potsdam Conference convened in 1945.  He was named a Knight of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1986.

A commitment to volunteerism is central to our mission.  All officers give freely and willingly of their time.  BSUF has no full-time staff.  It is our goal to make grants equaling 100 percent of donations.
